Parents

Very rare do problems arise in sponsoring a parent.  However, they do occur.  Generally there are four prime issues that arise in sponsoring a parent:

Are the parents genuine immigrants?

A parent who is not intending to reside permanently in Canada, but is intending to facilitate the admission of an accompanying dependent, may be refused an immigrant visa.

Can one parent be sponsored?

What if one parent does not want to immigrate to Canada?  You are permitted to sponsor one parent, however the non-accompanying parent will be taken into full consideration.

What if the parents are separated?

If your parents are separated and only one parent is being sponsored, the non-immigrant parent will not be required to have a medical examination nor a criminal background check.

What if one parent is medically inadmissible?

If one of your parents is medically inadmissible, this should be brought to the visa officers attention at the time the application is submitted. It is the practice of Citizenship and Immigration Canada to consider whether there are any humanitarian and compassionate grounds to facilitate the admission of a parent who is medically inadmissible. If the application is approved, the applicant would be admitted to Canada on a Minister's Permit, and would be eligible to apply for landing from inside Canada after five years.
